Let’s be honest, most of us at some point in our lives have spent time imaging what our lives would look like if only we could change just ONE thing about ourselves that we don’t like or wish were different.
“If only my hair was curly”
“If only my nose were just a bit smaller”
“If only I could lose 5kgs”
Then my life will be so much better, right?
It can be really easy to fall victim to harsh judgments of ourselves and we often see weight loss as an all round solution, that if we shed the kilos somehow all of our negative thoughts and patterns go with them. While changing your physical appearance through healthy habits leads to some wonderful results– you’ve got more energy, strength, better health and renewed confidence it does not magically give you self-confidence.
After all, true, long-lasting change takes time. You need to make time to practice self-love and acceptance along the way!
Here are a few tips to help you find your confidence and take on the world:
1. Face your feelings.
Acknowledging how you feel compared to how you think you should be feeling is an important step to manage your expectations of reality! While there are times that compliments about your weight loss can make you feel wonderful, other times the well-meaning compliments can make you feel vulnerable and uncomfortable.
When things like that happen, as yourself “why am I feeling this way?” and embrace whatever feelings you have, allowing yourself to grow and move forward.
2. Accept that there is no “perfect”.
Everyone is unique, you’ve probably heard it a million times. We’ve each got our own traits and genetics that we can use to become the best version of ourselves. But that doesn’t mean you should spend your life striving to be like the people we see in the media. Your journey to becoming the best version of yourself should be built on a foundation of self discovery and embracing all of the scars, stretch marks, curves, and dimples that tell your personal story.
3. Stop comparing yourself to others.
Focus on you, look at your own strengths and values, surround yourself with positivity, from your friends to your social feeds. Start to recognize what your triggers are, what makes you feel inadequate and remove them from your life – they’re not worth it.
Make this your year of loving you!
